It’s important to keep families moving
Transportation is a consistent and complicated challenge for all families in unstable housing, and we believe no child should have to be counted absent from school because of transportation-related issues. Our gas card program provides a straightforward, efficient way to give families and caregivers temporary transportation support to ensure their child doesn’t have to miss school or school-related activities.
Through this program we distribute gas cards in $25 denominations as well as maintain a budget for ride share options when that is more appropriate, all with the goal of mitigating this constant obstacle to a more stable living environment.
When are gas cards given out?
Considerations when determining whether a gas card or scheduled ride share is an appropriate and meaningful way to support a family include
- the family’s ongoing school transportation and attendance plan
- Current place of residence (shelter, hotel, doubled-up with another family; living in car or other inadequate space)
- Specific needs of the family as related to their housing and employment situation (reaching community service providers, keeping appointments critical to continued advancement)
- the family’s ability to fulfill basic needs such as going to the grocery store or food bank; or getting to medical appointments.
